List of Shame
Every year, the SPCA releases its List of Shame. This list highlights only a few of the worst and most despicable cases of animal cruelty and neglect to have happened in New Zealand over the past 12 months.
It is with sadness that we sit down each year to compile these lists from the thousands of animal abuse cases that we deal with, but it is a task that must be done if we are to give a voice to those who have none.
The lists do not make easy reading. But if you can bring yourself to do so, they might remind you why it is that we need to hold our Paws Appeal every year.
Here are a few of the cases from this year’s list of shame:
- A five month old puppy, named Polly, is discovered suspended upside down from a garage door at a property in Warkworth, North of Auckland. Her howls of pain alert neighbours, who find the German-Shepherd hogtied with industrial tape. She is also suffering from a badly broken leg.
.
- A Labrador-Pit-bull cross is dragged 50 metres behind a 4WD through the streets of Napier, attached to the vehicle by a yellow rope. He receives horrific injuries. One hind leg is ground down to the bone, with skin torn off all parts of his body. The pads of two of his paws are completely ripped off.
.
- A ten week old kitten is dumped on a Wellington cat foster home, bound with fishing
line around its body and paws. It is wrapped so tightly the kitten’s
fur and skin are penetrated. When the fishing line is finally removed,
it becomes apparent that the animal has suffered for days. It dies within
minutes of being freed from the line.
